Mark 6:1-12
"And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this [man] this wisdom, and [these] mighty works? Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this [man] all these things?"
It may appear to be a strange way to start a blog, especially one that will primarily focus on craftsmanship and woodworking; by hand that is. Yet I also suppose that if you are possibly going to take the time to follow a blog as menial as mine, you should learn a thing or two about us up front.
Kristin (my wonderful wife) and I love Jesus Christ! He is essential to our daily lives. We love the word of God, the King James Bible is still a prized possesion of ours. We are thankful to God that Christ died for our sin, and we shoot for the mark, trying to live Christlike on a daily basis. You should as well!
We also love wood working, I mean the old fashioned kind. In my heart and mind it does nothing but reveal the glory of God when I take an old restored stanley hand plane and begin to clear the surface of a plank of hardwood. As that cloudy surface begins to reveal the wonderful texture and incredible colors of whats soon to become a beautiful piece of furniture, I see in that the glory of God, for I do nothing more than display the beauty of what he created.
Therefore my aim here is to combine the two great passions in my life, serving Jesus Christ and hard work custom making hardwood furniture. It seems to me that tools have gotten nicer and more convenient, making wood work easier. Yet the product produced is in great decline when it comes to quality.
Now, this will not be a place to bash men that use expensive power tools, I am just saying that I prefer the simplicity and quietness of being alone with my God and my work .
The verse above presents an accusation, "Is not this the carpenters son?" and the answer is that he is not, rather he is the Son of the living God. But me, I have trusted in him for the forgiveness of my sin and the salvation of my soul, therefore I am the Carpenters son! Lord willing I aim to live and work like it.
P.S. Look out for more blog posts including videos of furniture and workbenches being made by hand...
